Kate Corbett-Winder

As an artist and passionate gardener, Kate is inspired by the Marches landscape and the colour and shape of plants in her herbaceous borders. She aims to capture the fleeting nature of plants and the magic of intense colour combinations that change through the seasons.

Her paintings do not set out to be precise representations, but a response to the changing rhythm and colours of the landscape and garden.

‘I’ve lived in mid Wales for over forty years and know that there seems to be a deep-rooted composition in my memory that invariably emerges in a painting. I often walk to a favourite place to revisit a group of buildings or the steep dip of skyline over the hills; I unashamedly edit the view to make a picture work, taking out anything that confuses the composition. I love emptiness in a landscape, where the space is dissected by a grid of hedges or groups of buildings, telegraph poles, church spires.’

In winter she focuses on still life; finding compositions in everyday vessels, flowers picked from the garden and potted geraniums.

She paints in oils but is passionate about scribble and mark making so brings pastel, charcoal, graphite line and collage into her art.

Kate has had six solo shows in London and is represented by Browse & Darby.
