Five ways of seeing

  • The Table 43 Lion Street Hereford, Wales, HR3 5AA United Kingdom (map)

Angela Slack MA(RCA)

Angela's abstract paintings explore ideas of absence and presence, where the immediate isn't always visible and can't be put into words. Through a combination of collage, hand drawn marks, and paint glazed layers a richness and depth is created within the surface. This offers a contemplative and reflective space for the viewer to engage with their own emotions and memories. lived experience.

Jan Austin

Janet Austin’s work explores memory, place, and the emotional resonance of everyday rituals. Through collage, paint, and textiles, she layers fragments that function as a visual diary, drawingon the idea of the palimpsest. Her mark-making often responds to early morning sounds and reflections, creating quiet mappings that reflect belonging, absence, and the subtle textures oflived experience.

Helen Antill

My intention is to paint the feeling of a place, holding on to the energy I felt when immersed in it. Colour is key, but so too is the mark-making, which I try to make intuitive, rather than laboured. The layering of different media has developed as, like many artists, I have let go of any formally taught 'rules'. This freedom has been liberating, and so unlike the original training I had as a Textile artist.

Hilary Turner

I have always loved being outside, immersed in the landscape.

Originally from Yorkshire, running and walking with those dramatic backdrops made a deep impression on me. Now living in Shropshire, I have found a way of expressing those responses and feelings through painting.

By initially building up the surface with collage and paint, then working into this base layer with other media and tools, in an attempt to create a sense of place rather than a specific view.

Morven Browne

The interplay of movement and light has always fascinated me. My sculptures highlight this relationship, exploring how environmental factors like wind and light produce dynamic shifts in form, shadow, and reflection. Each sculpture not only reflects our physical self, but also the changing external factors that influence our mental wellbeing, and the forces that challenge our inner peace and calm.
