SOPHIE WINDHAM

I usually paint landscapes, inspired by where I live. Although I don’t really consider myself a landscape painter! I paint from memory and photographs taken while walking in the hills. I paint in oil straight onto the canvas, gradually building up multiple layers, working on my paintings for months, ,sometimes years. I begin with quite a lot of detail, then gradually simplify and eliminate, hopefully leaving behind the essence and mood of the subject captured in colour and light, allowing the viewer the space for their own interpretation.

I paint because I have a need to. It feeds something deep in me and keeps me centred and calm. It’s strange to spend one’s days painting .I don’t suppose it makes a lot of sense to many people!

I feel very lucky in many ways to have a passion and a purpose, it gets me up in the morning!
